Coastal Hazards
Managing Coastal Hazards to Create a Sustainable Community
Coastal Hazards like flooding and erosion can be a financial and resource drain on communities if not addressed effectively:
- Requires a high level of emergency services, preparedness and response costs.
- High costs to maintain infrastructure for both routine functions (roads, water systems, energy, communications) and for special storm or erosion protection projects.
- Compromises natural protective features that provide environmental quality as well as low cost storm protection.
- Continuing burdens on housing stock, business and open space unless adaptive measures are identified in advance and accompanied by funding or other necessary support.
- Periodic storm damage overwhelms protection, resulting in severe losses and potential long-term compromise of the community.
