Serving Local Government Officials

Communities + Waterfronts provides resources and expertise to help local officials and government leaders serve their constituencies and implement community revitalization programs. We can help foster cooperation and collaboration to overcome the challenges they face.



We offer assistance in three specific areas:

 Local Government Efficiency provides technical and financial assistance to help municipalities increase competitiveness by reducing taxes and taxpayer cost, create positive returns on public investments, and increase service delivery efficiencies through local government functional analysis and reorganization, inter-municipal cooperation and regional service delivery.

 Community Development and Sustainability programs help government leaders to fund and implement public improvement projects that will have positive, lasting benefits for their community. Resources include Environmental Protection Fund Local Waterfront Revitalization Program; Brownfield Opportunity Areas Program; Smart Growth Initiative, Appalachian Regional Development Program and New York City Watershed Protection and Partnership Council.

 Local Government Training helps members of planning boards, zoning boards of appeals, local governing boards, and others learn about how to plan and effectively implement land use regulation for their municipalities. DOS staff with a background in land use planning provide information about annual training requirements as well as the training itself and respond to questions about land use planning, regulation, and local governance.
