The New York State Department of State Division of Consumer Protection actively participates in proceedings concerning the availability, pricing and quality of natural gas service in the State. The Division submits formal filings and our experts testify on behalf of consumers before the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) in proceedings involving proposed natural gas delivery rate increases by major utilities. The Division has helped save consumers hundreds of millions of dollars on their gas bills in recent years.

The Division's objectives regarding natural gas service include:

  • Challenging utility requests for delivery rate increases to ensure that natural gas is obtained at a just and reasonable price;
     
  • Designing cost-effective gas efficiency programs for utilities to implement; and,
     
  • Ensuring that utilities provide reliable, safe, and high quality service.
