New York Department of State Launches Official Information and Assistance Clearinghouse for New York State Childhood Arrival Deferred Action Program

New York Secretary of State Cesar A. Perales today launched the official information and assistance clearinghouse for the New York State Childhood Arrival Deferred Action Program. This clearinghouse of information and assistance via a website and a toll-free hotline is being launched as part of a comprehensive program to ensure New York’s eligible youth take full advantage of the new federal Deferred Action process without being exploited by scammers.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently announced that certain young people who were brought to the United States as young children, who do not present a risk to national security or public safety, and who meet selected criteria may apply and be considered for Deferred Action, which is relief from removal (deportation) from the country or from being placed in removal proceedings. Individuals receiving Deferred Action will be given this status for two years, subject to renewal, and will also be eligible for employment authorization (work permits). Federal and State authorities expect this change to trigger an increase in scams targeting immigrants.

“We are pleased to be partnering with immigration service providers, advocates, private sector and the federal and local governments to coordinate a central information and assistance clearinghouse,” said Secretary Perales. “Our website is the official information and assistance clearinghouse for New Yorkers regarding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. This information will help thousands of young people take full advantage of this new opportunity. I encourage New Yorkers to visit www.nysdeferredaction.ny.gov to learn about Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and to sign up for an information session or free legal consultation event.”

The website includes:

Updated information will be added to the website and will be accessible via the hotline as the federal government releases the final Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals guidance, which is currently scheduled for August 15, 2012. Information sessions, training events and free legal consultation opportunities will be added as they are scheduled.
The launch of this clearinghouse is part of the Cuomo Administration’s comprehensive program to ensure New York’s eligible youth can take advantage of this positive change in federal immigration rules, while protecting them from fraud.
