Funeral Notification Scam

Funeral Notification Scam
The New York State Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning consumers about on ongoing scam in which scammers are sending e-mails with the subject line "funeral notification."

The notice claims to be informing recipients of an upcoming farewell ceremony being held in remembrance of a friend or loved one. The e-mail deceptively appears to be from a legitimate funeral home and instructs recipients to click on a link for “more detailed information”.

The link, as it turns out, sends victims to a third party website where malware can be downloaded onto their machines. The malware allows scammers to gain access to the computers’ information.
The New York State Division of Consumer Protection would like to remind consumers to be wary of unsolicited e-mails requesting your immediate action. To prevent falling victim to this scam, please keep the following tips in mind:

  • If you receive an e-mail from a funeral home about a friend or loved one’s passing, contact the funeral home or family directly to verify the information.
  • To avoid downloading unwanted malware, do not do not click on links or open files in unfamiliar emails. Be sure to keep your security software updated.
