Governor Cuomo's Community Action Month Proclamation

Whereas, the residents of the Empire State join in commemorating milestones of progress in the history of our
state and nation; during the month of May 2014, we observe Community Action Month, marking the 50th anniversary of
the War on Poverty and the creation of the national network of Community Action Agencies; and

Whereas, in August of 1964, President Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act, creating the nationwide
Community Action Network; since then, Community Action Agencies have a proud history of promoting self-sufficiency
for low-income people and economic development for low income communities; and

Whereas, National Community Action Month was established in 1997 to share the successes of Community
Action and to honor the dedication of staff and volunteers and the achievement of individuals who have benefited from the
diverse Community Action programs; and

Whereas, Community Action Agencies provide numerous services to low-income New Yorkers including Head
Start, housing and emergency assistance, child and adult care, food programs, energy assistance programs, prevention
and education programs, and many others to help low-income New Yorkers escape poverty and achieve self-sufficiency
and economic security; and

Whereas, in partnership with elected officials, the private sector, and low-income citizens, Community Action
Agency boards continue to identify challenges facing low-income people and seek ways to strengthen the community; and

Whereas in 2013, the Community Action Agencies in New York State assisted more than one-half million low income
children, adults, and seniors in accessing services, assisted 34,604 unemployed individuals in obtaining
employment, organized more than one million volunteers across the state in helping the poor, and provided emergency
food to over 230,000 individuals; and

Whereas, Community Action changes people's lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and
makes America a better place to live;

Now, Therefore, I, Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim May 2014 as

Community Action Month
