Submit an application to the Department of State which shows:
• you are at least 18 years of age
• completion of at least 81 hours of qualifying education
• passage of an alarm installer examination
• freedom from disqualifying criminal convictions
• submit proof of fingerprint completion

Applicants are required to submit evidence of education which demonstrates sufficient training in installing, servicing or maintaining of security or fire alarm systems. The 81 hours of course work may be completed in any course of study which has been approved by the Department. The courses may be given by trade associations or other private entities. An "alarm installer" installs, services or maintains security or fire alarm systems to detect intrusion, break-in, movement, sound or fire. Any entity which engages in the business of providing any of these services must be licensed by the Department as an alarm installer.
No. A license is not required to install systems on motor vehicles, boats or airplanes.
No. A license is not required to install a battery operated smoke detection device. However, a person who is in the business of installing a hard wired smoke detector must be licensed.
No. If a purchaser or owner personally installs the alarm system, or has it installed by an employee on his or her own property or place of business, a license is not required.
Yes. Beginning June 11, 2015, Alarm Installers will receive a letter when their employees have submitted a “Business of Installing, Servicing or Maintaining Security or Fire Alarm Systems Employee’s Statement” and have qualified for employment.
A Master Electrician who practices only within his or her local jurisdiction must register with the Department. However, all licensing requirements are waived, including the submission of fingerprints. A Master Electrician who wishes to engage in the business of alarm installation outside of his local jurisdiction must be licensed by the Department. Education, experience and exam requirements are waived for applicants, but each applicant must submit fingerprints. See Master Electrician Waiver.
Approximately 90 days prior to the expiration of your original, two-year term of licensure, a computer generated renewal form will be sent to you. Simply complete the form, enclose the renewal fee of $100 and return as directed.
