New York State Announces Applications Open for 2016-2018 Empire State Fellows Program Class

The State of New York today announced the opening of the application process for the latest class of the prestigious Empire States Fellows program. Now in its fifth year, the initiative recruits exceptional and diverse talent from all around the country to serve in high-level positions in New York State government.

“The Empire State Fellows program has been an effective way to recruit talented individuals from a wide array of professional careers and brings their skills and new ideas to work for the people of New York State,” said Rossana Rosado, Acting New York Secretary of State. “Previous Fellows have included former assistant district attorneys, U.S. Army veterans, business professionals, and non-profit managers, showcasing the range of talent these classes have usually produced. We look forward to welcoming another diverse and dedicated class to Albany.”

To apply to be an Empire State Fellow, candidates must email a cover letter, resume, personal statement, and two letters of recommendation to fellows@exec.ny.gov, before 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2016. For more information on the Empire State Fellows Program and the application process, go to http://www.dos.ny.gov/newnyleaders/fellows_app.html.

The Empire State Fellows program is a unique training ground to prepare and retain professionals for policy-making roles in New York State government. Once selected, they will work closely with senior administration officials and participate in the policy decisions that will help transform our State.

While working full-time in State government, Empire State Fellows will also engage in specially tailored educational and professional development programs created collaboratively by the Cuomo Administration and the Rockefeller Institute at SUNY Albany. These programs include interaction with the top leaders in State government, as well as on-the-ground experience learning from local government officials.

Since its inception in 2012, the two-year program has begun preparing a new generation of policy-makers to help lead New York State well into the future, with various Empire State Fellows going on to serve in appointed positions throughout the administration upon completion of their two-year Fellowship. To date, Governor Cuomo has appointed more than 25 Empire State Fellows to senior positions in his administration.

“The Empire State Fellowship is a one of a kind opportunity for professionals to pivot into a career in public service,” said Katharine Neer, a former Fellow from the 2014-2016 class. “The Fellowship placed me with world class mentors who provided me with invaluable experiences and empowered me to grow into my current position as Assistant Secretary for General Government and Financial Services. Empire State Fellows have unmatched access to the talented team of people running New York State’s government, and the experience often leads to careers in public service, where we all work to make New York better for everybody.”

“The Empire State Fellows program is one of the best opportunities for young professionals who wish to serve,” said Carlos Cuevas, Senior Policy Advisor to the State Medicaid Director. “The program not only places fellows in positions where they are working alongside top leaders in state government to solve challenging issues, but the program also offers the fellows one-on-one mentoring connections and structured policy-training seminars.  In all, the exposure, training and experience offered by the program allows fellows to make a real difference in the lives of New Yorkers as well as expedite his/her professional development and career trajectory.”

The Empire State Fellows program is part of Governor Cuomo’ s New New York Leaders initiative that recruits experienced professionals, college graduates and student interns to serve in State government. For more information, see http://www.dos.ny.gov/newnyleaders/index.html.
